TMJ is more formally known as temporomandibular joint, and more commonly known as "jaw joint, " or the the small joint that attaches the lower jaw to the skull. This joint is located right in front of the ear lobe and allows the fluid motion that we're used to. Without the TMJs, we could not eat, speak, swallow, or open and close our mouths for any other reason.
The diseases and disorders of the TMJ area a complex set of conditions. The indications of such a condition include pain in the entire jaw area and neighboring muscles, as well as limited mobility. They can affect eating, swallowing, speaking, and even facial expression. It can also be common to experience TMJ pain when other join condition, like arthritis, already exist.
