What Is Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Wisdom teeth, clinically known as third molars, typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25 as the final set of permanent teeth. These vestigial structures often lack adequate space in modern jaw structures, leading to impaction, crowding, or infection that necessitates professional extraction.

Why Third Molar Extraction May Be Necessary

Prevention of Crowding

Emerging wisdom teeth can disrupt years of orthodontic work by forcing adjacent teeth out of alignment.

Increased Risk of Infection

Partially erupted molars create pockets where bacteria accumulate, leading to painful pericoronitis and a potential risk of systemic infections.

Cyst Prevention

Impacted wisdom teeth may develop fluid-filled sacs that damage jawbone structure and surrounding dental roots.

Pain Resolution

Extraction alleviates chronic discomfort from nerve pressure and inflammation caused by malpositioned third molars. Approximately 85% of adults require wisdom tooth extraction at some point in their lifetime.

Signs You May Need Wisdom Teeth Removal

  • Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth

  • Swelling or infection around your wisdom teeth

  • Damage to adjacent teeth

  • Pain or discomfort in the back of your mouth

I do not have adequate words to say how much I recommend Dr. Chemla - he is incredibly caring for his patients, very compassionate and understanding. The quality of his work is exceptionally excellent, in my case - creative! I do not think any other dentist would actually take me on with my dental issues and extensive work that he is doing for me for the past 6 years. He will coordinate care as needed with specialists and always goes an “extra” mile to make sure work is completed in the best possible way. It is so very incredible to have such a specialist to care for you not just as a patient, but as a person. I would more than highly recommend Dr. Chemla, absolutely and without reservation. May God bless him in every possible way! 🙏🏻The office staff is also wonderful and helpful in every possible way - scheduling appointments with specialists, even coordinating the prescription for me recently when I could not call during work hours. They also go “extra” mile in every possible way to take care of their patients! Thank you so much to every one of you! 🙂

I can’t recommend Dr. Chemla enough. I came to him to help me with a severe front tooth chip. Not only does my repair look amazing and identical to my original tooth, but the entire experience was pleasant considering the work I got done. Dr. Chemla is extremely warm, kind, light hearted, and comforting as I was quite distressed about my front teeth. He was happy to explain each step in my repair and I never felt confused or unsure about the next steps. During the period of time that I had a temporary tooth, he made sure I knew he was always available if something happened and it came off. I also really appreciated how after every visit he would check up on me later that day with how the tooth was feeling/looking. On top of his welcoming demeanor, he has been by far the best experience I’ve had with getting numbing shots and work done. He explains everything he’s doing and genuinely values you having a good experience. I used to dread getting numbed but after many painless visits to him, it wasn’t a concern anymore. As far as the work that got done, I genuinely cannot see a difference between my real teeth and the repairs. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience or result!

All I can say is WOW!!! From the moment I made the phone call and spoke with Lisa, my experience has been unreal and so wonderful. Lisa is pleasant and full of knowledge. The office is clean and COVID protocol friendly! I had a cleaning that surpasses all other cleanings that I’ve had in my life - and trust me, I’ve had many! State of the art technology is the name of the game at Chemla’s office!! After my incredible cleaning, I had an exam with Dr. Chemla. He literally talked to me about every tooth that he had a concern with. He walked me through how he’d like to proceed with care. He asked me questions about my life and if I understood all that he said. This is the kind of doctor we all need - kind, gentle, smart and amazing. I’m so grateful for the experience and I can’t wait for my friends and family to become patients!!!

When should wisdom teeth be removed?

Wisdom teeth should be removed when they are impacted, causing crowding, are difficult to clean properly, or are developing decay or gum disease due to their position. Early removal is often recommended during the late teens or early twenties when roots are not fully developed and healing is faster.

What are the signs that wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Common signs include pain or tenderness in the back of the mouth, swelling or bleeding gums around the wisdom teeth, difficulty opening your mouth, and bad breath or taste from infection. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule an evaluation at Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentistry to determine if your wisdom teeth require removal.

Is wisdom teeth removal painful?

The wisdom teeth removal procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you shouldn't feel pain during the extraction, though you may experience pressure. Post-operative discomfort typically peaks within 24-48 hours and can be managed effectively with prescribed pain medications and ice packs from Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentistry.

How long does recovery take after wisdom teeth removal?

Initial healing takes about 1-2 weeks, with most patients returning to normal activities within 3-7 days, depending on the complexity of the extraction. Following the recovery guidelines from Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentistry and avoiding strenuous activities for several days helps ensure smooth healing for patients in Beverly Hills.

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Not all wisdom teeth require removal - those that emerge properly, are healthy, can be cleaned effectively, and don't cause crowding may be kept with proper maintenance. Your dentist at Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentistry will evaluate your specific situation through clinical examination and X-rays to determine whether your wisdom teeth should be removed or can be safely monitored in Beverly Hills.

Will insurance cover wisdom teeth removal in Beverly Hills, CA?

As an in-network Aetna provider accepting all PPO plans with out-of-network benefits, we coordinate coverage maximization for your extraction procedure. Our financial team provides detailed benefit analysis and offers Cherry, CareCredit, or customized payment arrangements.

When should someone have wisdom teeth removal in Beverly Hills, CA?

Optimal extraction timing occurs during late adolescence when roots remain underdeveloped and bone density allows easier removal. However, symptomatic teeth warrant immediate evaluation regardless of patient age.

What is the recovery time after wisdom teeth removal in Beverly Hills, CA?

Initial healing typically requires 3-5 days of modified activity, with complete soft tissue recovery within two weeks. Our comprehensive aftercare protocols and premium post-operative supplies accelerate healing while minimizing discomfort.
